Tenth woman’s body found wrapped in a duvet in Soweto

A woman’s body has been discovered wrapped in a duvet at a dam in Moroka, Soweto, prompting police to open an inquest into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The unidentified body was found on Sunday afternoon, with police confirming that the victim is believed to be in her twenties. At this stage, investigators have not established how the woman died or how her body ended up at the dam. Gauteng police have appealed to members of the public who may have information about the discovery to come forward.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation can contact their nearest police station, call the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or submit an anonymous tip-off through the MySAPS app.

Discovery comes amid Ekurhuleni killings investigation

The latest discovery comes as authorities continue investigating the deaths of nine women whose bodies have been found in and around Ekurhuleni in recent weeks.

The cases have sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for urgent action to identify those responsible. The Interministerial Committee on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide was briefed on the investigations into the deaths earlier on Sunday.

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga said the government had directed law enforcement agencies to treat the investigations as a matter of the highest priority.

“On priority of law enforcement protection, safety and justice, a multidisciplinary specialized investigation team as the President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed that the investigation into these killings must receive the highest level of attention from government and law enforcement agencies,” Chikunga said.

She added that the multidisciplinary team established to investigate the Ekurhuleni cases had been elevated and would now be coordinated by the Deputy National Commissioner for Detective Services.

Police investigate Soweto discovery

It is not yet known whether the death in Moroka is connected to the cases being investigated in Ekurhuleni. Police have not suggested that the incidents are linked, and the Moroka case is currently being handled as an inquest. The identity of the deceased woman is also yet to be established.

Investigators are expected to rely on forensic evidence, including the post-mortem examination, to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The discovery is likely to fuel further public concern following the series of women’s bodies found in Ekurhuleni, but authorities have urged the public not to draw conclusions before investigations establish the facts. The investigation remains ongoing.
