A woman believed to be a sex worker has reportedly been arrested after a man was allegedly stabbed to death following a dispute over payment in Ha-Mphego, outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo.
The incident has attracted widespread attention on social media, where several accounts have circulated different versions of what allegedly happened before the fatal confrontation. Available reports consistently indicate that a disagreement involving money preceded the stabbing, although some of the more detailed claims circulating online have not yet been independently confirmed by police.
According to reports emerging from Ha-Mphego, the man and the woman had allegedly arranged to meet for a sexual encounter after agreeing on a payment of R800.
The man reportedly paid the agreed amount, but an argument subsequently developed over money. Several local social-media reports claim the woman demanded additional payment after allegedly realising that the client had more cash in his possession.
One widely circulated version of the story claims that the woman increased her demand from the initially agreed R800 to R3,500. The same account alleges that she threatened to open a rape case against the man if he did not hand over the additional money.
However, those particular allegations require caution. While the R800 initial payment and subsequent demand for more money appear across several reports, there are discrepancies over the amount allegedly demanded. One account puts it at R3,500, while another circulating online refers to R3,000. What appears consistent across the accounts is that the disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation.
The woman allegedly stabbed the man during the altercation, leaving him with fatal injuries. Reports from the area indicate that the man died following the stabbing.
The incident reportedly happened in Mphego village, situated outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo. Other reports claim that the woman involved is originally from Makonde. A separate account of the incident also reports that police subsequently launched an investigation into the fatal stabbing.
Images and accounts purportedly connected to the incident have since spread rapidly across Facebook, Instagram and X, sparking heated debate among social-media users about the circumstances that allegedly led to the man’s death.
Some accounts have described the incident as a payment dispute involving a sex worker and her client. At this stage, however, the woman’s occupation, the exact nature of the agreement between the two and the events immediately preceding the stabbing should all be treated as allegations unless confirmed through police investigations or court proceedings.
The most serious additional allegation — that the woman threatened to falsely accuse the deceased of rape — also remains unverified. No evidence found in established news reports or an official South African Police Service statement presently confirms that claim.
Police investigations will therefore be crucial in establishing what happened, including whether there were witnesses to the altercation, where the stabbing occurred, what weapon was allegedly used and the sequence of events leading up to the man’s death.
Investigators would also be expected to establish whether the suspect acted deliberately or whether other circumstances surrounding the confrontation could become relevant as the case progresses.
If arrested in connection with the death, the woman would remain presumed innocent unless and until convicted by a court. As of Friday, August 7, the searches I conducted found multiple social-media reports concerning the Ha-Mphego incident but no detailed SAPS statement or report from a major established South African newsroom confirming the R3,500 demand and alleged rape threat.
For that reason, those details should not be presented as established facts.
Police investigations into the man’s death are continuing, and further information is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation, the charges the woman may face and when she is expected to appear in court.
