17-year-old schoolgirl and a 19-year-old former student from St Stithians College were found dead

Police in Mpumalanga have opened an inquest following the deaths of two young people linked to Johannesburg’s St Stithians College, whose bodies were discovered at a lodge in Sabie earlier this week.

Former pupil Ethan Coetzee and Grade 11 learner Cameron Waldeck-Cooks were found dead at the lodge on Monday, 3 August 2026.

Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the St Stithians community, with the school paying tribute to the pair and remembering them for their sporting talent, dedication and character.

St Stithians described both as outstanding sportspeople who had made a lasting contribution to the school and its sporting community.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened as investigators work to determine what happened.

According to Masondo, a male and female were found dead at a lodge in Sabie on Monday. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted to determine the exact causes of death.

At this stage, police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances leading up to the deaths, and the investigation remains ongoing.
