Shock at Quagga Mall as Couple Turns Ackermans Fitting Room Into a Love Den

What began as an ordinary weekday rush at Quagga Shopping Centre in Pretoria West ended with stunned shoppers, hurried security patrols and a fitting room abruptly closed to the public, after a couple was allegedly caught engaging in intimate conduct inside an Ackermans store.

The incident unfolded in the early afternoon, a peak period when parents, workers and students were moving through the mall in search of discounts and essentials. The atmosphere inside the clothing retailer was calm and routine, with customers browsing school uniforms and casual wear, until staff noticed unusual activity coming from one of the fitting rooms.

Several witnesses said the first signs were not visual, but audible. Repeated giggling, whispered voices and hurried movement from behind a closed curtain reportedly drew attention. Shoppers nearby began exchanging glances as the sounds continued for several minutes, well beyond what would normally be expected during a fitting session.

Store employees were alerted and approached the fitting room area to assess the situation. According to accounts from people inside the store at the time, staff knocked and asked the occupants to come out. When the curtain was finally opened, the scene that emerged left both staff and shoppers visibly shocked.

The couple, believed to be adults, reportedly exited the fitting room looking flustered and disorganised, their appearance suggesting they had been engaged in activity unrelated to trying on clothes. Eyewitnesses said there was a brief moment of silence before murmurs spread across the store.

Security personnel were called in almost immediately. Within minutes, guards arrived and escorted the couple out of the shop, away from public view. The fitting room area was temporarily closed as staff worked to restore order and ensure other customers could continue shopping without further disruption.

No injuries were reported, and there was no indication of violence or coercion. However, the incident sparked immediate concern about public conduct and the use of shared commercial spaces.

Outside the store, the couple was taken aside by mall security for questioning. While details of that discussion were not officially released, witnesses said the pair appeared embarrassed and avoided eye contact as they were led away.

By the time calm returned, the incident had already become the main topic of conversation throughout the shopping centre. Shoppers were seen laughing, whispering and replaying what they had witnessed, while others expressed discomfort, especially those who had been shopping with children.

“I came here to buy clothes, not to see things like that,” said one shopper, who asked not to be named. “There are families here. It’s not appropriate.”

Another customer described the situation as surreal. “You don’t expect something like that in a place like Ackermans, in the middle of the day. People were shocked.”

Mall management moved quickly to reassure the public. In a brief statement shared with shoppers and later circulated online, management confirmed that an incident had occurred and said it had been handled in line with centre policies.

“Quagga Shopping Centre takes the safety and comfort of all patrons seriously,” the statement said. “Security responded promptly, and appropriate action was taken. We remind all visitors to respect public spaces and adhere to acceptable standards of behaviour.”

Ackermans staff also declined to comment in detail but confirmed that internal procedures were followed and that the store resumed normal operations shortly afterwards.

The episode quickly spread beyond the mall walls. Within hours, social media platforms were flooded with posts, jokes and reactions, many referring to the incident using the slang term “Tlof Tlof.” Some users treated the matter humorously, while others criticised the behaviour and called for stricter enforcement of public conduct rules.

The fitting room involved gained unexpected notoriety, with shoppers jokingly referring to it as “famous” and warning others to “knock twice.” Despite the humour, several voices online urged people to remember that retail spaces are shared environments meant for everyone.

Legal experts note that while such incidents often end with warnings or removal from premises, public indecency laws can apply depending on the circumstances. These laws are designed to protect the public from exposure to inappropriate conduct in shared spaces.

Police were not immediately called to the scene, and it remains unclear whether any formal charges will be pursued. In many similar cases, mall management handles the matter internally unless there are aggravating factors or repeated offences.

The incident has reignited discussion about behaviour in public spaces and the pressure faced by retail workers, who are often the first to intervene in uncomfortable or inappropriate situations.

Retail unions have previously raised concerns about staff being placed in difficult positions without adequate support when dealing with disruptive or inappropriate behaviour from customers. While no staff member was harmed in this case, the situation required quick judgment and calm handling.

By late afternoon, the fitting rooms were back in use, shoppers returned to browsing, and the mall atmosphere settled into its usual rhythm. Yet the incident lingered in conversation, serving as a reminder of how quickly routine public spaces can become the centre of unexpected controversy.

For many, the shock was not just about what allegedly happened, but where it happened. A fitting room in a family clothing store, during business hours, challenged assumptions about privacy, boundaries and respect in everyday places.

As the crowds thinned and stores closed for the day, the episode had already secured its place in local mall lore. But beyond the jokes and social media buzz, the message from management was clear.

Fitting rooms are for clothes, not conduct that crosses public lines — and in shared spaces, privacy has limits.
