Concern is growing after a viral social media video surfaced showing a group of women allegedly handling and cocking firearms inside a house, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about firearm safety in South Africa.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since issued a stern warning against the reckless and illegal use of firearms, saying the behaviour seen in the video appears dangerous and irresponsible. The footage, which has been widely shared across various social media platforms, shows women appearing to play with guns while laughing and recording themselves.
According to SAPS, only individuals who possess valid firearm licences or legal permits are allowed to handle firearms in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. Police warned that people who allow unlicensed individuals access to their firearms could also face criminal charges.
Authorities expressed concern that the women seen in the video may not have received proper firearm training, making the situation even more alarming. SAPS stressed that firearms are not toys and should never be handled carelessly, especially for entertainment or social media attention.
Police further warned that even imitation firearms, blank guns, and toy guns can land individuals in trouble with the law if they are used in a way that causes fear, panic, or intimidation among members of the public.
The incident has sparked heated debate online, with many South Africans calling for stricter firearm control and stronger action against people who misuse weapons for social media trends. Others warned that such reckless behaviour could easily lead to accidental shootings, injuries, or even deaths.
SAPS urged the public to report anyone found in illegal possession of firearms or handling weapons recklessly. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.
Police say irresponsible firearm handling remains a major concern in the country and continue to appeal to gun owners to store and use their weapons responsibly at all times.
