A solemn funeral at St Mary’s Catholic Parish Church in Merebank, south of Durban, turned into a scene of horror on Saturday, August 16, 2025, when brothers Tevin Luke Beck, 31, and Keagan Beck, 26, were shot dead outside the church moments after one delivered a heartfelt eulogy for their uncle. The brazen attack has left their family, friends, and the community in profound shock, grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
The brothers, who had traveled from Johannesburg to attend their uncle Clinton Mark Paul’s funeral, were standing outside on Juggernaut Road when two armed men in a black Polo with no license plates opened fire. Tevin, shot 11 times in the face and abdomen, died en route to the hospital in the arms of his wife, Michelle.
Keagan, struck five times in the back, was declared brain dead and passed away shortly after. Their mother, Raquel Beck, 52, described the agony of seeing her sons bleeding in the street, robbed of their jewelry in the attack. “My heart is shattered beyond words. They did not deserve to die like this,” she said, refuting social media rumors linking her sons to gang activity.
Reverend Herman Giraldo, who presided over the funeral, initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers. “One of the young men delivered a eulogy, thanking his uncle for being his mentor and teaching him to put family first,” he recalled. “Minutes later, I heard what I thought were fireworks, but then saw people scurrying and screaming.”
Taking cover behind the altar, Giraldo emerged to find chaos—Raquel collapsed in distress, and one of the brothers lifeless on the ground. “I advised the undertaker we’d say a final prayer for the uncle and end the service. We couldn’t continue under such tragic circumstances,” he added.
Michelle Beck, Tevin’s wife, recounted the terrifying moments. “Tevin felt emotional after his eulogy and said he might throw up. We put our daughter to sleep in the car, then stepped outside with Keagan for a cigarette. That’s when we saw the car and two men in balaclavas with guns. Tevin pushed me toward the church and told me to run. Then the shots rang out,” she said, her voice breaking as she described her worst nightmare unfolding.
Raquel believes the motive may stem from jealousy over her sons’ success after leaving Wentworth’s troubled streets for Johannesburg in 2020, where they founded Atrack Protection Services, a security company. Tevin, a father of two (aged 8 and 3), and Keagan, father to a 10-year-old daughter, had worked to turn their lives around, even helping local youth escape drugs and crime.
“People said they were gangsters or drug dealers. That’s not true,” Raquel insisted, suggesting an old high school grudge might be a factor, though those involved are long deceased. “They were fathers, brothers, men who changed their lives for the better.”
Some alleged that the brothers were suspected of killing their uncle who was being buried.
Wentworth SAPS is investigating two counts of murder, with no arrests made as of August 21, 2025. Captain MP Gumede urged anyone with information to contact Wentworth SAPS at 079 500 1167, CrimeStop at 08600 10111, or the MySAPS app, guaranteeing anonymity. KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi noted that community members helped thwart a potential revenge attack in Wentworth targeting the suspected killers.
PT Alarms responded swiftly, securing the scene alongside police and Community Policing Forum members. “Emotions were high as everyone tried to make sense of what happened,” said spokesperson Dhevan Govindasamy. The following day, PT Alarms increased patrols as the church held its Sunday service amid lingering trauma.
The Merebank community remains shaken, with vigils outside St Mary’s spelling out “Justice for the Brothers” in candles. Resident Thandiwe Mbatha captured the collective grief: “We came to bury one, but lost two more.” As the investigation explores motives from personal grudges to possible taxi industry ties—despite family denials—the Beck family clings to hope for justice, though Raquel expressed distrust in police due to perceived corruption.
Tevin’s children and Keagan’s daughter now face a future without their fathers, a loss Raquel struggles to explain to them. “Tevin was his son’s role model and his daughter’s love,” she said. “We’ll be lost without them.”
