Harare magistare Ethel Chichera sentenced Chimutamba to eight years imprisonment but suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.

A further three years were suspended for restitution of the property by July 31 this year.

Prosecutor Takudzwa Mutyavaviri proved that Chimutanda committed the offences using the same modus operandi between March and June this year.

On count one, which he committed on June 11, Chimutanda went to office number 222, located at the department of creative media and communication and unlawfully gained access to the building passage door and broke the ceiling boards.

The student reportedly stole 2 HP, 23,8 Inch all-in-one, core i5 desktop black in colour and an external drive, transcend (grey, green and black).

Mutyavaviri said Chimutanda repeatedly gained unlawful entry into the institutions hostels and administration offices on different days and stole property including laptops, desktop computers, a Lenovo ThinkPad and an Iphone 11.

Chimutanda was on an aeronautical aviation programme and was supposed to start his internship with Air Zimbabwe on the day of his sentencing.

In mitigation, he pleaded with the court for a lenient sentence saying he had failed to acquire funds for a project he was doing hence he went on to steal.
