Johannesburg, South Africa— In a chilling development tied to one of South Africa’s most notorious prison escapes, the woman who photographed and leaked images of Thabo Bester and Nandipha Magudumana shopping in Sandton City in June 2022 has been found murdered in her Sandton home.

The 41-year-old, whose identity has not been publicly released pending family notification, was shot 14 times in what police describe as a targeted killing on September 15, 2025. The brutal attack, occurring three years after her photos exposed Bester’s faked death, has reignited fears of retaliation in the ongoing saga of the convicted rapist and his accomplice.
The victim, a former Woolworths employee who recognized Magudumana in the store and snapped the pictures out of curiosity, played a pivotal role in unraveling the escape plot. Speaking to GroundUp in March 2023, she explained: “I recognized Magudumana in the shop. She did not recognize Bester but was surprised to see Magudumana with a man who was not her husband.
She took a picture to show a friend who is a fan of Magudumana.” The images, showing a man resembling Bester with long hair and sunglasses alongside Magudumana and a child, were forwarded to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS). Spokesperson Emerantia Cupido confirmed it was “the first time JICS has seen these photos,” sparking a national investigation that confirmed Bester’s survival and led to his April 2023 arrest in Tanzania.
Police discovered the woman’s body in her Sandton residence early Monday, riddled with bullets from a high-caliber weapon. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo stated: “The scene suggests a violent, targeted attack. No items were stolen, pointing to motive beyond robbery.” Forensic teams recovered 14 spent casings, indicating a prolonged assault.
No arrests have been made, but SAPS is probing links to Bester’s network, including prison officials and associates implicated in the escape. “We are not ruling out connections to the Bester case; this could be retaliation,” Masondo added. Crime Stop (08600 10111) is seeking tips, with anonymity assured.
Bester, 39, the self-styled “Facebook rapist,” faked his death in a May 2022 Mangaung Correctional Centre fire, aided by Magudumana and others, before fleeing to Tanzania. His lavish post-escape life—funded by scams—ended in arrest, but legal battles continue. Key updates include:
- April 19, 2023: Public Protector blamed Correctional Services for “undue delay” in handling the escape.
- February 21, 2024: Bester switched lawyers again in the escape case.
- June 5, 2024: Bester requested the death penalty’s reinstatement during pre-trial.
- July 31, 2024: DCS denied solitary confinement claims; court dismissed his prison conditions application as “half-baked.”
- September 17, 2024: Bester sought a laptop and modem for case prep.
- February 28, 2025: Deputy Justice Minister Andries Nel vowed no repeat escapes.
- May 16, 2025: Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed Magudumana’s unlawful arrest bid.
- June 17-18, 2025: Magudumana’s father sought her lawyer’s help after legal aid rejection; court warned trial proceeds regardless.
- July 9, 2025: Commissioner Samuel Thobakgale assured Bester’s security at Kgosi Mampuru C-Max.
- September 12, 2025: Court rejected Bester and Magudumana’s bid to halt Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester documentary.
- September 13, 2025: Magudumana’s lawyers denied she profited from the docuseries.
The woman’s murder, three years after her photos blew the case open, raises alarms. GroundUp noted JICS’s shock at the images, which contradicted official narratives and implicated DCS officials. Bester, serving life for rape and murder, faces additional charges for the escape, with trial set for 2026.
Magudumana, 39, awaits hers, her father’s legal woes adding to the drama. Human rights groups like the Helen Suzman Foundation decry the case’s exposure of systemic failures in prisons, where escapes like Bester’s highlight corruption.
As SAPS investigates, the killing underscores the dangers of crossing criminal networks. “This isn’t coincidence—it’s vengeance,” tweeted @JusticeWatchSA, with 20,000 views. The woman’s family, grieving privately, seeks justice. In Bester’s shadow, her death reminds: Truth can be fatal.
