Bloemfontein – A catastrophic collision involving an Interstate bus and a heavy truck on the N8 highway between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein claimed the lives of 10 people and left 30 others injured on Saturday morning, 15 November 2025.

The crash happened around 06:35 near the RRR farming area, as heavy rain swept across the Free State, turning roads treacherous.
All 10 victims who died at the scene were adults – seven men and three women. Of the injured, six suffered critical, life-threatening wounds, five sustained moderate injuries, and 19 escaped with minor harm.
Sipho Towa, chairperson of the Free State Road Incident Management System, said wet weather was likely a major contributing factor. “The collision has resulted in significant traffic disruption, with lanes heading into Bloemfontein currently closed while emergency services continue operations at the scene,” he added.
Critically injured patients were rushed to Pelonomi Trauma Hospital and Braam Fischer Busamed Hospital in Bloemfontein, while others were treated at Botshabelo Hospital.
The N8 is a vital commuter and commercial route, and the accident occurred during the busy early-morning rush hour, causing massive delays. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes until the highway is cleared and reopened.
Emergency teams remained on site for hours, managing rescue efforts and removing wreckage. A full investigation into the exact cause of the crash will begin once the scene is secure.
Authorities have reminded drivers to exercise extreme caution in the ongoing rainy conditions across the province.
