Durban – A 31-year-old man narrowly escaped death after being kidnapped, chained, and locked in the trunk of a car, only to break free in a sugarcane field early Monday morning, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) confirmed.
The unemployed builder and father of a young daughter said his nightmare began on Sunday evening around 19:30, when he accepted a lift near Bassas Mall in Mayville. Inside the silver Toyota Etios were three men and a woman.
“Minutes into the ride, they took my phone and began assaulting me,” he recalled. “They chained my feet together with padlocks and shoved me into the trunk.”
For hours, the victim said, the group drove around to various locations, including taverns, before stopping near a sugarcane plantation at about 04:00. Fearing for his life, he believed the kidnappers planned to kill him and dump his body.
When another vehicle approached, the suspects became distracted. That was his chance. He bolted into the cane fields, hid in the darkness, and later found his way to a nearby road. Desperate, he flagged down a taxi, whose driver immediately took him to RUSA headquarters.
Reaction Officers used bolt cutters to remove the chains and padlocks binding his legs before handing him over to police.
“The victim was freed and transferred to the South African Police Service,” a RUSA spokesperson confirmed.
The taxi driver who rescued him had to leave to drop off passengers, meaning the exact location of the escape could not be traced.
The ordeal lasted about eight hours. Authorities have since urged the public to remain cautious, avoid hitchhiking, and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
