Matric Student’s last words to mum: ‘I think I’m dying’

A 17-year-old matric pupil, Thandolwethu Moagi, has died in Vosloorus after becoming seriously ill at school, and her family is accusing the school of negligence.

Thandolwethu, described by relatives as a happy and ambitious learner, suddenly became unwell on 4 February while attending Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School. Around midday, she contacted her mother to say her head hurt, her heart was racing and she felt as though she was dying.

By the afternoon, her condition had deteriorated, and classmates alerted her family. When her brothers arrived at the school, they found her collapsed and foaming at the mouth. According to her uncle, several school staff were present but did not immediately seek medical help. Her brothers then transported her to J Dumane Clinic, where medical teams attempted to stabilise her, but she died shortly after arrival.

The Moagi family says the school failed to follow proper safety and emergency procedures. They also criticised how the school allegedly informed other pupils of her death before contacting the family, and questioned why senior staff did not come to their home to speak with them.

Thandolwethu had been keen to finish school and pursue a career in medicine. Her family says they are devastated by the loss and are calling for a full investigation. Initial reports suggest poisoning as a possible cause, and the Gauteng Department of Education says it has launched an inquiry into the incident.
