Mpumalanga MEC to Visit Family of Stabbed Grade 8 Learner in Nkangala District

Nkangala District, Mpumalanga – Lindi Masina, the MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, is scheduled to visit the family of 17-year-old Tshepo Tshabalala, a Grade 8 learner at Senzangakhona Secondary School, following his fatal stabbing by a fellow learner on Thursday afternoon.

The incident unfolded as Tshabalala was walking home from school. Eyewitnesses reported that an altercation, which originated earlier in the day, escalated into violence, culminating in the stabbing. School staff were promptly notified, and emergency services were summoned; however, Tshabalala was declared dead at the scene.

Police subsequently arrested the alleged attacker, a minor, at his residence. The weapon used in the stabbing was discovered in the possession of another learner, who was also detained for questioning. Both individuals, being minors, were released pending further investigation and consultation with a probation officer.

A Disturbing Pattern of Violence

This tragic event comes on the heels of another recent stabbing at a school within the same district, where a learner sustained critical injuries but survived. The recurrence of such violent incidents in educational institutions has raised significant concerns among authorities and the community.

“The MEC will meet with the family to offer condolences before engaging with local government officials to address the surge in learner-on-learner violence,” an official statement indicated. “Afterwards, she will visit the school to brief educators and the principal on measures to prevent further incidents.”

No court date has been announced for the suspect as legal procedures continue. The community remains in a state of shock, while education officials confront the escalating trend of fatal violence in schools.
