Tshwane Mum Devastated by Losing Daughter in Shack Fire

In a heartbreaking tragedy, Seipati Tlhape (36) is mourning the loss of her six-year-old daughter, Amogelang Mokwena, who perished in a shack fire in Extension 6, Mamelodi East, Tshwane, on Sunday, 27 July. The fire, which destroyed three shacks, has left the family in deep grief and dire need of support.

Seipati recounted the horrific moment when the fire broke out while she was outside with friends. Her 12-year-old son, who was with Amogelang, managed to escape by jumping through a window, sustaining injuries to his head and hand.

Despite his efforts to save his younger sister, he was unable to reach her. “My daughter didn’t deserve to die like that,” Seipati said, her voice heavy with sorrow. She suspects faulty electrical cables may have sparked the blaze, though the cause remains under investigation.

Amogelang, a lively grade R pupil at Pfundzo Ndi Tshedzo Primary School, was cherished by her family and community. “She loved people,” Seipati recalled. “I think of her when I’m eating or just sitting.” Amogelang’s grandmother, Betty Tlhape (63), shared her anguish, saying, “My daughter lost her beloved child, clothes, food, and home. This is unbearable.”

The family’s loss has shaken their neighbors and friends. Busisiwe Mawonga (20), the daughter of the property owner, described Amogelang as a child who grew up as part of their extended family. “We’re heartbroken,” she said, appealing for donations to help the family, who lack the funds to cover funeral costs. Neighbor Alfred Mavimbela (65) and family friend Olivia Ndlovu (32) echoed the community’s shock and sorrow.

Tshwane Emergency Services acting spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni reported that six other tenants survived the fire, and another child with minor burns was treated at the scene before being taken to Stanza Bopape Clinic for further observation. Gauteng police spokeswoman Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened as authorities work to determine the fire’s cause.

The family, now left with nothing, is pleading for assistance to rebuild their lives and give Amogelang a dignified farewell.
