The passing of legendary South African actor Seputla Sebogodi has been overshadowed by a heartbreaking family dispute, with relatives and the actor’s wife of just six months reportedly at odds over his body and funeral arrangements.
Sebogodi, a household name in South African television and film, passed away on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, after suffering complications related to diabetes. Tributes poured in from fans, fellow actors and industry colleagues who remembered him as one of the country’s most respected performers.
However, behind the scenes, a painful conflict has emerged between his immediate family and the woman believed to have married the actor only months before his death.
According to family members, they were left shocked after learning about the marriage, claiming the woman had never been introduced to them during Sebogodi’s lifetime. Relatives say they had no knowledge of the union and were unfamiliar with the woman now identified as his wife.

The issue came to light during a family meeting held shortly after the actor’s passing, where emotions reportedly ran high as relatives tried to understand the situation. Among those deeply affected was Sebogodi’s elder sister, Mary, who became visibly emotional and broke down in tears while discussing the family’s concerns.
The emotional meeting has since attracted widespread attention after footage circulated online, prompting many South Africans to express sympathy for the grieving family while others called for privacy during such a difficult time.
Adding to the family’s distress are claims that they have been prevented from viewing Sebogodi’s body. Relatives say they have been denied the opportunity to pay their final respects and perform important cultural and family traditions associated with mourning.
The disagreement has also extended to where the veteran actor should be buried.
According to reports, Sebogodi’s relatives would like him to be laid to rest at Makgopeng Cemetery, believing it is the most appropriate final resting place. His wife, however, is reportedly in favour of Silicon Cemetery, creating yet another point of contention between the two sides.
As discussions continue, no official resolution has yet been announced, leaving uncertainty over the actor’s funeral arrangements.
The burial dispute has sparked intense debate on social media, with many South Africans divided over who should have the final say. Some believe a legally married spouse should be responsible for making funeral decisions, while others argue that immediate family members should also play a significant role, particularly when they claim they were never informed about the marriage.
Meanwhile, fellow actor and director Mandisi Sindo has reflected on Sebogodi’s final days, sharing an emotional tribute in which he remembered the veteran entertainer as a humble, dedicated and inspirational figure whose contributions to South African television will never be forgotten.
As loved ones continue to mourn one of the country’s most celebrated actors, many hope the family can resolve their differences peacefully and honour Seputla Sebogodi with the dignity and respect he earned throughout his remarkable career.
