Russia Prohibits Transgender Individuals From Adopting Children

Russia has reportedly banned transgender people from being able to adopt children as part of their ban on legal gender recognition and gender-affirmative interventions.

In a post by Amnesty International, this ban came from the lower chamber of the Russian parliament on July 14, 2023 during the amendments to the Family Code and several federal laws related to gender.

Per this new law, “those who have undergone gender affirmative surgery abroad will not be able to obtain legal gender recognition in Russia.”

It also includes a ban on gender affirming interventions such as “gender affirming surgery and hormone therapy, with surgeries aimed at treating congenital anomalies (malformations), genetic and endocrine diseases associated with impaired formation of the genital organs in children, being the only exceptions.”

“These remaining surgical options will require approval from state medical commissions before a change in gender markers can be made in official documents.”

Also, those who have undergone gender-affirmation will not be eligible to become legal guardians or adoptive parents, and their marriages will be automatically dissolved.

For those who already had legal gender recognition prior to the amendments’ enactment will not be affected retroactively by the changes.
