JUSTICE SERVED: MATATIELE AXE MURDERER SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

A 40-year-old man from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape, Mboneleli Ntantiso, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a brutal attack that left his girlfriend dead and several of her family members seriously injured.

The horrific incident took place in May last year at the victim’s home, where Ntantiso launched a violent assault using an axe. According to reports, the attack not only claimed the life of his girlfriend but also turned into a bloodbath as he went on to attack members of her family who were present at the time.

Three relatives sustained severe injuries during the ordeal. Among them was the deceased’s sister, who miraculously survived despite suffering deep axe wounds to her thighs. Her survival has since been described as both tragic and courageous, highlighting the devastating impact of the attack on the entire family.

Following the incident, Ntantiso fled the scene, prompting a manhunt by police. Authorities managed to track him down and arrest him within a week, bringing an end to his brief attempt to evade justice.

The case was initially heard at the Matatiele Magistrate’s Court before being transferred to the Maluti Regional Court, where he was ultimately found guilty on multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

During sentencing on March 26, the court handed down a life sentence for the murder. In addition, Ntantiso received an effective 45 years’ imprisonment for three counts of attempted murder, as well as 10 years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court emphasized the severity and brutality of the crime, noting the use of a deadly weapon and the lasting trauma inflicted on the surviving victims. Law enforcement officials also welcomed the sentencing, stating that it sends a strong message that perpetrators of gender-based violence will face the full force of the law.

The case has once again drawn attention to the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa, where many women continue to lose their lives at the hands of intimate partners.

For the victim’s family, while the sentencing cannot undo the pain and loss they have endured, it marks a crucial step toward justice. The bravery of the survivors, especially the sister who lived through the attack, stands as a powerful reminder of both the horror of that day and the resilience of those left behind.
