A North West family and the community of Kanana near Orkney have been left devastated following the brutal death of a young girl who was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her uncle during a shocking incident inside the family home.
The child has been identified in community and advocacy reports as Relebohile Princess Mokhoke. While some social media reports, including Women For Change, have listed her age as seven, police information reported by established news outlets describes the victim as eight years old. TimesLIVE reported the incident using information supplied by North West police.
The tragedy unfolded on Monday, June 15, 2026, just one day before South Africa commemorated Youth Day.
According to North West police spokesperson Constable Thuto Bobelo, Relebohile’s mother was at home with her two children when her 23-year-old brother allegedly entered the house.
Police said the man allegedly grabbed his young niece before taking her into a bathroom and locking the door behind them.
Fearing for the child’s safety, the mother and her son reportedly fled the house in a desperate attempt to find assistance. They managed to alert police officers who were patrolling in the area.
The officers immediately rushed to the family’s home.
Upon entering the house, police reportedly heard the young girl screaming from behind the locked bathroom door. Officers were forced to break into the bathroom in an attempt to rescue her.
Their intervention allowed the seriously injured child to escape from the room.
However, police said that after Relebohile managed to get out, her uncle locked himself inside the bathroom once again.
Officers subsequently forced their way back into the room and discovered the 23-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his neck, chest and abdomen. He was declared dead at the scene.
Police believe he died by suicide.
Relebohile had sustained several stab wounds to her neck and was rushed to a nearby clinic in a desperate attempt to save her life. Despite efforts to assist her, the young girl later succumbed to her injuries.
Police subsequently opened a murder case as well as an inquest into the man’s death. The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation and, according to police, the motive has not yet been established.
Acting North West provincial police commissioner Major-General Ryno Naidoo described the incident as both shocking and tragic, saying no child should become a victim of violence, particularly at the hands of someone within their own family.
Naidoo also noted the painful timing of the tragedy, occurring just a day before Youth Day — a national day intended to recognise young South Africans and remember the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976.
He said the killing was another disturbing reminder of how violence within homes and communities continues to claim innocent lives.
