Police have dismissed false social media reports claiming that missing Limpopo toddler Omphile Sethole has been found dead, warning that the spread of misinformation is causing unnecessary pain to the child’s family and disrupting ongoing investigations.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe strongly condemned the circulation of fake news surrounding the disappearance of the two-year-old, who vanished from her home in Ga-Mabuela village during the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to police, Omphile was allegedly taken while sleeping beside her grandmother. The grandmother reportedly left the room briefly to use the bathroom and returned to discover the child missing and a window open.
Authorities confirmed that the search for the toddler remains active and ongoing.
“The sharing of false reports on social media is not only irresponsible but also criminal,” said Hadebe. “It creates panic and diverts public attention from the real facts.”
She urged members of the public to avoid posting or forwarding unverified information, adding that investigators are working around the clock to track down whoever is responsible for the child’s disappearance.
Police have opened cases of kidnapping and housebreaking as investigations continue.
The South African Police Service has appealed to communities to assist with credible information that could help bring Omphile home safely.
Anyone with information regarding the toddler’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the investigating officer or report to the nearest police station. (sowetan.co.za)
