In a swift response to a violent crime spree, North West police have arrested 26-year-old Mfana Ngwenya, who stands accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 20-year-old Kgaugelo Nnonu Morata, and the attempted murder of his current 20-year-old girlfriend in a shocking series of stabbings in Maubane village.

According to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson, the suspect allegedly carried out the fatal attack on Morata before turning on his current partner. “The suspect allegedly murdered his ex-girlfriend, a 20-year-old Kgaogelo Marota, and attempted to kill his 20-year-old current girlfriend,” Myburgh confirmed in a statement to the press.
The grim discovery of Morata’s body was made on Thursday at a local tavern in Maubane village. Authorities reported that she had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).
Preliminary investigations suggest that after the attack on Morata, Ngwenya returned to his residence, where he allegedly stabbed his current girlfriend several times in a separate but related assault. The second victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where she remains under medical care for her injuries.
Major General Patrick Asaneng, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in North West, praised the diligence and quick action of the officers involved in apprehending the suspect. Ngwenya was taken into custody in the early hours of Friday in Carousel View, a location near Maubane, following a rapid investigation that led police to his whereabouts.
Adding a chilling dimension to the case, Ngwenya reportedly took to social media shortly after the incidents, posting a message on Facebook that appeared to address the events. “They may judge me, but you and I know the truth, you ruined us, as I posted everything on (the) app it will prove that. RIP. I promised you till death do us apart after I fought for your life. Will forever love you Mmamogashwa,” he wrote, in what authorities are reviewing as potential evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The arrest has brought some relief to the Maubane community, which has been shaken by the brutality of the crimes. Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice is served. Ngwenya is expected to face the Temba Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 25, where he will answer to charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities have urged the community to remain calm as the legal process unfolds.
