A cloud of mystery surrounds the death of South African attorney and businesswoman Ntombi Toni Khumalo, who passed away under suspicious circumstances in Liberia. Her husband, Samuel Jackson, has now been identified as the main suspect as authorities intensify their investigation.

The Liberia National Police confirmed that Jackson is currently being held for 48 hours while detectives continue gathering evidence. Initially treated as a person of interest, his status changed after early findings, including forensic examinations, witness statements, and a detailed reconstruction of events at the couple’s residence in Sinkor, Monrovia.

Inspector General Gregory O. W. Coleman stated that the detention is part of standard legal procedure, allowing investigators time to determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be crucial in uncovering the exact cause of Khumalo’s death, which remains unknown at this stage.

Khumalo, who hailed from Gauteng, was a respected legal professional admitted to the High Court of South Africa. Beyond her legal career, she was also a successful entrepreneur, running her own firm, NK Attorneys, as well as a fashion label, NK Brands.

She also held a traditional leadership role within the Amantungwa/Nguni lineage, where she was recognised as a queen, adding to her prominence both professionally and culturally.
Meanwhile, several domestic workers from the household are still being questioned as persons of interest, as police work to piece together a clear sequence of events leading up to her death.
The case has sparked widespread attention in both Liberia and South Africa. Khumalo’s family, based in Johannesburg, is expected to travel to Liberia as the investigation continues.
Authorities have indicated that a decision on whether to formally charge Jackson or release him will be made within the required legal timeframe as the probe progresses.
