Watch: Ngizwe’s home burnt

Controversial former Ukhozi FM presenter and activist Ngizwe Mchunu has been left devastated after his home in Mbumbulu, south of Durban, was allegedly set on fire by unknown suspects on Sunday, 10 May.

According to reports, Ngizwe was not at home when the incident happened. Witnesses claim that a group of men arrived at the property looking for him shortly before the house went up in flames. Furniture and parts of the house were badly damaged during the attack.

The shocking incident has sparked widespread debate across South Africa, with many people linking the attack to Ngizwe’s recent anti-illegal immigration marches that have drawn massive crowds in Durban and other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

One of Ngizwe’s close associates and fellow activist, Nkosikhona Phakelumthakathi Ndaba, confirmed the incident and said they believe the attack may be connected to their activism.

He said although the damage to the property was severe, they were relieved that no one was injured during the fire.

Phakelumthakathi also revealed that another activist linked to their movement allegedly suffered a similar attack just weeks ago when his home in Umzimkhulu was reportedly damaged.

The activists claim they are being targeted because of their ongoing campaign against illegal immigration. They insisted that their marches are peaceful and warned those allegedly behind the attacks to stop intimidating them.

The incident has since gone viral on social media, with videos and pictures of the burnt property circulating online as South Africans continue debating whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to tensions surrounding the marches.

At the time of publication, Ngizwe had not publicly commented on the incident. Authorities have also not confirmed any arrests or the exact motive behind the fire.
