A small community in Mahikeng’s Mosiane View village has been left reeling after a 25-year-old man allegedly hacked his 48-year-old mother to death with a shovel before being fatally shot by a neighbour attempting to stop him.

The attack happened around 11:00 on Saturday, 4 October 2025, in full view of stunned residents. A video of the brutal scene, now circulating on social media, has drawn widespread outrage and disbelief across the country.

In the footage, the young man can be seen striking his mother repeatedly, even after she collapses to the ground. Neighbours scream in horror as one man is heard pleading with him to stop. Seconds later, a gunshot rings out — fired, according to witnesses, by a neighbour trying desperately to end the assault.

The suspect was struck and later succumbed to his injuries. Police have opened an investigation into both deaths.

Police Confirm Incident

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West confirmed the shocking events in a statement issued on Saturday evening.

“The SAPS in North West Province is aware of a video circulating on social media platforms regarding an incident in which a 25-year-old boy hacked his mother to death at around 11:00 on Saturday, 4 October 2025, at Mosiane View village, Mahikeng,” the statement read.

“It is alleged that the aggressive and uncontrollable son later succumbed to his injuries after being hit by one of the shots fired by a neighbour to calm him down. The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage and investigations into the matter are underway.”

Occult Crimes Unit Joins Investigation

The case has since drawn the attention of the SAPS Occult Related Crimes Unit, which has been tasked with probing whether drug use or possible ritualistic influences may have played a role.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng described the attack as “sadistic, gruesome, and senseless,” adding that it reflected a disturbing pattern of violence among young people in the province.

“The death of a mother at the hands of her son is symptomatic of the scourge of satanic ritual practices or drug addiction to which most young people are exposed,” Asaneng said. “These are issues often ignored by parents and a nonchalant, apathetic society.”

He said the police would leave “no stone unturned” in determining what led to the murder.

Shock and Horror in the Village

By Saturday afternoon, the normally quiet streets of Mosiane View were crowded with onlookers, many still in disbelief. Blood stained the dirt outside the family’s home. The air was heavy with grief and confusion.

“I heard her screaming for help,” said one neighbour, who asked not to be named. “We rushed out, but what we saw — no one should ever see that. He was not himself. It was like he was possessed.”

Another resident, visibly shaken, said the young man had been acting strangely in recent weeks. “He used to be quiet, polite. But lately he was talking to himself, shouting at night. Sometimes he looked like he was fighting something inside him.”

Community members say the neighbour who fired the fatal shot did so in an effort to save the woman’s life. “He didn’t want to kill him — he was trying to stop the attack,” said one witness. “But it was too late. She was already gone.”

Video Sparks National Outrage

The graphic video of the killing, which began circulating hours after the incident, has sparked an outpouring of anger online. Many users have called for social media platforms to remove the footage, saying it retraumatises the family and community.

“This is beyond disturbing,” one post read. “We need to stop sharing these kinds of videos. That mother deserves dignity.”

Others have questioned why warning signs of the suspect’s deteriorating behaviour were seemingly ignored. “There were red flags,” another user commented. “We talk about mental health only after tragedy strikes.”

Calls for Action

Community leaders and activists have called for urgent intervention to address what they describe as a growing crisis of youth violence, drug abuse, and psychological distress.

“This is not an isolated case,” said social worker and community organiser, Dineo Mosola. “Every week we hear of young people snapping — turning on their families, committing horrific acts. It’s a sign of something deeply broken in our society.”

Mosola said the government’s failure to provide accessible mental health services and addiction support in rural areas was contributing to such tragedies. “We’re dealing with silent suffering,” she said. “By the time someone explodes, it’s already too late.”

Police Warn Against Spreading Video

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from sharing the disturbing footage online. Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, spokesperson for the North West police, appealed for respect and sensitivity.

“This is a deeply distressing case,” he said. “We ask the public not to circulate the video. Doing so only causes more harm to the family and complicates our investigation.”

Tselanyane confirmed that both the deceased mother and her son’s identities are being withheld until all relatives have been notified.

Community in Mourning

The village has been plunged into mourning. Residents gathered outside the home on Saturday night, lighting candles and singing hymns for the slain woman.

“She didn’t deserve to die like that,” said one neighbour, tears streaming down her face. “She worked hard, she was kind to everyone. This is pure evil.”

As grief gives way to anger, many residents are demanding answers — not only from the police, but from society itself. “We are failing our youth,” said another villager. “If drugs or evil spirits are taking over our children, where are the churches? Where are the counsellors? Where are the leaders?”

A Tragedy That Cuts Deep

The case has highlighted once again the fragile state of social cohesion in communities grappling with unemployment, poverty, and rising drug use. For many, it’s a painful reminder that the breakdown of family structures and lack of support systems can have devastating consequences.

As the SAPS Occult Related Crimes Unit continues its investigation, the village of Mosiane View is left haunted by two deaths — a mother’s unimaginable suffering, and a son’s violent end.

For now, the dirt road where the tragedy unfolded remains quiet, the blood washed away by afternoon rain. But the echoes of that morning — the screams, the gunshot, the silence that followed — will linger in Mosiane View for years to come.
