A horrific murder has rocked the small community of Ngogo, KwaKhoza in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, after a young mother was gunned down in her sleep while lying next to her 2-year-old child.
The victim, Phindile Ndlovu, was found dead in her bed in the early hours of Sunday morning, her body riddled with bullets. Her toddler, who had been sleeping beside her, was soaked in blood but miraculously escaped without injury.
According to police, the attacker broke into Phindile’s home under the cover of darkness and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Shockingly, it is alleged that the suspect — believed to be a woman — woke Phindile’s 7-year-old child, showed them their mother’s lifeless body, and then disappeared into the night.
The chilling act has left residents in disbelief and fear, with many describing the killing as one of the most disturbing incidents the community has ever witnessed.
Neighbours told reporters that they heard gunshots but were too afraid to go outside. “We only came out when it was quiet,” said one resident. “When we entered the house, we found her child crying next to her body. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Local community members say Phindile, believed to be in her late 20s, was a quiet and respectful woman devoted to her children. She reportedly worked odd jobs to support her family and had no known enemies.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that a murder case has been opened and investigations are ongoing.
“The suspect is believed to be a woman known to the victim. We are following several leads and appealing to anyone with information to come forward,” said Netshiunda.
Detectives spent the morning combing through the scene, collecting spent cartridges and taking statements from neighbours.
While police have not confirmed a motive, early speculation from community members suggests the killing may have been driven by jealousy or a domestic dispute. Others fear it could be linked to rising violent crimes in the area.
KwaKhoza residents have since called for increased police visibility and urgent intervention, saying that women in the area no longer feel safe in their homes.
“If someone can be killed in their sleep, what hope do we have?” asked a neighbour. “We need police patrols. We need protection. This cannot become normal.”
Local leaders have also condemned the brutal killing, describing it as a wake-up call for authorities to address the growing tide of gender-based violence in rural communities.
Ward Councillor Sibusiso Mthembu said the attack had left the village “in shock and mourning.”
“Phindile’s death has broken us. She was a young mother with her whole life ahead of her. To die like this, in her own bed, next to her child — it’s beyond cruel,” Mthembu said.
Social media has since been flooded with messages of grief and anger, with users expressing heartbreak over the toddler who witnessed the gruesome scene. Many called for swift justice and harsher penalties for perpetrators of such crimes.
Non-profit organisations advocating for women’s safety have also weighed in. Women Rise SA issued a statement on Monday urging authorities to prioritise the case.
“This is not just another murder. It’s a reflection of how unsafe women are in South Africa. Phindile’s story must not fade away — justice must be served,” the statement read.
The surviving children are reportedly staying with relatives as social workers and trauma counsellors provide support.
Police say the identity of the suspect is known, but an arrest has not yet been made. Officers have launched a manhunt, and rural police units have been deployed to assist in tracking down the alleged killer.
This latest incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks targeting women in KwaZulu-Natal, where reports of femicide continue to rise despite government pledges to curb gender-based violence.
As night fell over Ngogo, a heavy silence lingered in the village. Outside Phindile’s modest home, neighbours gathered in prayer, lighting candles and placing flowers near the doorway where the young mother took her last breath.
For now, the small community waits — for answers, for justice, and for peace.
Police have urged anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
