A Limpopo family is demanding justice after a 19-year-old man was allegedly killed in Mossel Bay, Western Cape, after being mistaken for a foreign national during recent tensions reportedly linked to anti-immigrant protests.

The victim, identified as Nhlamulo Sambo from Giyani in Limpopo, was allegedly stabbed to death during an incident that has left relatives, friends, and community members devastated.
According to information shared by family members on social media, Nhlamulo had been living and working in Mossel Bay when violence reportedly erupted in parts of the community amid unrest involving foreign nationals. It is alleged that the teenager was targeted because he spoke Xitsonga, a language commonly spoken in Limpopo and parts of Mpumalanga.
His sister, Nonhlanhla Sambo, took to Facebook to express the family’s grief and anger, claiming that her brother was attacked after being removed from a residence before being fatally stabbed.
“They killed my brother as if his life meant nothing. His only ‘fault’ was being Tsonga in a predominantly Xhosa community. As a family, we are deeply hurt by this inhumane act. Justice must be served, and we will not remain silent,” she wrote.
The heartbreaking post quickly gained traction online, with many South Africans expressing outrage and calling for authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Nhlamulo’s death.
Family members say they are struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young man whose life was only beginning. They described him as a hardworking and respectful teenager who had left home in search of better opportunities.
The incident has reignited concerns about xenophobia, tribal tensions, and the dangers of mob violence in South Africa. While anti-foreign national protests have occurred in several parts of the country over the years, activists and community leaders have repeatedly warned that innocent people are often caught in the crossfire, with some South Africans being wrongly identified as foreigners because of their language, appearance, or accent.
Community organisations have condemned the alleged killing and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands. They have also called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
The South African Police Service has reportedly launched investigations into the matter, although details surrounding the attack remain limited. Authorities are expected to interview witnesses and gather evidence to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the teenager’s death.
As the investigation continues, Nhlamulo’s family says they will not rest until justice is served. The tragedy has sparked renewed conversations about unity, tolerance, and the need to protect all people from violence regardless of their language, ethnicity, or nationality.
For the Sambo family, however, the focus remains on seeking answers and honouring the memory of a young man whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances.
