University of Limpopo Student Overcomes Blindness to Graduate Cum Laude in Law

A remarkable story of perseverance and determination has emerged from the University of Limpopo, where a young student has proven that disability is never the end of one’s dreams. Lethabo Maleka, a 24-year-old from Ga-Mphahlele in Limpopo, has graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), inspiring many with his incredible journey.

A Life-Changing Encounter at a Young Age

Maleka’s life took a dramatic turn when he was just 10 years old. During a visit to a pit toilet near his home, he encountered a spitting cobra, a highly venomous snake known for spraying venom toward the eyes of its target. The venom affected his eyesight severely.

Over time, the damage worsened, and Maleka eventually lost his sight completely. For a young boy with dreams of a bright future, the sudden loss of vision was devastating. At one point, the lack of support and resources forced him to drop out of school.

However, his story did not end there.

Finding Hope at a School for the Blind

Determined to rebuild his life, Maleka later enrolled at Siloe School for the Blind in Polokwane. It was here that he learned Braille, adapted to life as a visually impaired student, and began regaining his confidence.

With the support of teachers and a strong personal determination, Maleka began to excel academically. His dedication soon paid off as he worked tirelessly to prove that losing his sight would not define his future.

A Top Achiever in South Africa

Maleka’s hard work reached national recognition in 2021 when he became one of the top 20 matric achievers in South Africa. He achieved an outstanding 87.61% average while studying at Setotolwane Secondary School, a result that placed him among the country’s most impressive learners.

His academic excellence earned him national recognition, including an invitation to a special breakfast hosted by the former Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and her deputy Makgabo Reginah Mhaule. During the event, Maleka was honoured for his exceptional performance and determination.

Graduating Cum Laude in Law

Motivated by a passion for justice and a desire to help vulnerable communities, Maleka enrolled in the LLB programme at the University of Limpopo. Despite the challenges that come with studying law while visually impaired, he remained focused and disciplined.

His dedication paid off when he successfully graduated Cum Laude, a prestigious academic achievement that recognises outstanding performance.

An Inspiration to Many

Today, Maleka’s journey stands as a powerful reminder that determination can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. His message to other young people facing hardships is simple but powerful:

“Disability is not inability.”

With his law degree in hand, Maleka hopes to use his knowledge to advocate for justice and support vulnerable communities, ensuring that others who face challenges are not left behind.

His story continues to inspire many across South Africa, proving that resilience, courage, and hard work can turn even the toughest circumstances into a success story. 🌟
