14-Year-Old Schoolgirl Stabbed 7 Times By Her Stepfather While On Her Way To School

A 43-year-old man, Malesela Mehlape, appeared before the Mankweng Magistrates Court facing charges of murder after allegedly stabbing his 14-year-old stepdaughter, Rebotile Moloto, to death earlier this year. The shocking incident has left the Ga-Thoka community reeling with grief and anger.

Rebotile, a Grade 9 learner at Klaas Mothapo High School, was walking to school with a classmate in March when Mehlape confronted her. According to police reports, he stabbed the teenager multiple times, causing fatal injuries. While the motive remains unclear, investigators are probing possible links to family or marital disputes. Community members described Rebotile as a bright young girl with dreams of becoming a teacher, whose violent death has sparked outrage and renewed calls for tougher action against gender-based violence.

The prosecution argued strongly against bail, labeling Mehlape a danger to society and stressing that the brutal attack happened in full view of a friend, leaving lasting emotional trauma. Outside court, residents, activists, and classmates staged a protest carrying placards that read “Stop Killing Our Children” and “Justice for Rebotile.” The provincial Department of Education extended condolences to the Moloto family, calling her death a devastating loss to the school and community. Mehlape has been remanded in custody, with a formal bail hearing set for later in September, as advocacy groups push for stronger child protection laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.
