South African singer Kelly Khumalo has revealed that her son, Christian Khumalo, has considered dropping out of school, sparking a heated debate about education and success among Mzansi social media users.

The award-winning singer made the revelation during an interview with L-Tido on his YouTube podcast, where she openly discussed her views on the education system and her approach to raising her children.
Kelly, who shares Christian with television personality and rapper Jub Jub, said she was not surprised when her son told her that he no longer wanted to continue with school.
Kelly Khumalo Questions the Education System
During the conversation, Kelly argued that the traditional education system is too focused on one definition of success.
According to the singer, society has created the impression that education is the only legitimate route to achieving success.
“To them, the only form of success is education. It is very systematic,” Kelly said.
She pointed to the high number of graduates who struggle to find employment after completing their studies.
Kelly argued that young people could have different outcomes if they were also taught practical skills such as business management and entrepreneurship.
The Ngathwala Ngaye hitmaker also revealed that she herself dropped out of school, suggesting that her own journey influenced the way she views education.
Her Son Christian Wants to Leave School
L-Tido asked Kelly how she would respond if one of her children told her they no longer wanted to attend school.
The singer revealed that this had already happened, with Christian telling her that he wanted to drop out.
“I realised that maybe as a mom I need to create a better structure than what I was given,” Kelly explained.
She said she was not shocked by her son’s decision because she saw similarities between his thinking and her own experiences.
“I was not surprised when my son said he does not want to do this anymore,” she said.
Kelly also suggested that she had always told herself that her children would not necessarily have to follow the conventional path imposed by society.
“I always told myself that I would not raise children who would be part of the system. The system is very flawed,” she said.
Mzansi Pushes Back
Kelly’s comments quickly sparked debate on social media, with many South Africans disagreeing with her views and arguing that formal education remains an important foundation for young people.
Some users pointed out that while it is possible to become successful without formal qualifications, dropping out of school does not automatically lead to entrepreneurship or financial success.
Others argued that unemployment among graduates should not be used as evidence that education has no value.
One social media user criticised Kelly’s argument, saying that education provides young people with opportunities and skills that cannot simply be replaced by starting a business.
Another argued that the country’s high unemployment rate has caused many young people to lose faith in education, despite its importance.
A third user pointed out that successful entrepreneurs can still value education, using billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe as an example.
Others defended Kelly’s position, saying that young people should be allowed to explore different paths instead of being told that university or formal employment is the only definition of success.
Debate Over Christian’s Future
The discussion has also raised questions about what happens when children of celebrities decide to reject the traditional education path.
While Kelly has expressed her willingness to support her son’s decisions, many social media users believe dropping out should not be taken lightly.
For some, the issue is not necessarily whether university or formal employment is the right path, but whether a young person can develop the necessary skills, discipline and knowledge to succeed outside the traditional education system.
Kelly’s comments have therefore opened a much bigger conversation about education, entrepreneurship and the pressure placed on young people to follow conventional career paths.
Kelly Previously Spoke About Her Children’s Fathers
The latest revelation comes after Kelly recently made headlines for comments about the fathers of her children.
The singer reportedly described some of her children’s fathers as being ineffective as parents, while praising the late Senzo Meyiwa for being hands-on and responsible when it came to fatherhood.
Kelly’s comments about Christian’s education have now added another chapter to the ongoing public interest surrounding her family life and parenting choices.
