A birthday meant to be a day of celebration ended in horror after a man allegedly shot and killed his wife multiple times upon discovering she had been having an affair with her manager.

The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in Johannesburg, leaving neighbours and relatives reeling in disbelief.
The victim, identified by close friends as Portia, had just turned 32. According to family members, her husband had organised a surprise braai at their home to celebrate her birthday, inviting close friends and relatives to join in.
But the festive mood quickly turned into tragedy after what appeared to be a night of deceit, heartbreak, and rage.
A Celebration That Never Happened
Portia reportedly arrived home from work on Saturday evening with several gifts from colleagues. Her husband, believing she had come home to prepare for the birthday celebration he had planned, was surprised when she told him she was heading out to celebrate with friends instead.
“They argued briefly,” said a neighbour. “She told him not to worry and left. He looked upset but didn’t say much. None of us thought it would end like this.”
The husband, who has not yet been named pending court appearance, reportedly tried calling his wife several times that night — but she did not answer.
When she eventually returned home at around 6 a.m. the following morning, she went straight to the bathroom without saying a word.
The Confrontation
According to police sources close to the investigation, the husband followed her into the bathroom and confronted her about her whereabouts. The argument escalated when he demanded to see her phone.
What he discovered, investigators say, shattered him.
“Upon checking the phone, he found messages and photos confirming that she had not been with her friends but with her manager,” said a police officer who asked not to be named. “The evidence reportedly showed that she spent the night with him.”
In a fit of rage, the husband allegedly drew his licensed firearm and shot her five times at close range.
Neighbours reported hearing multiple gunshots and screams just before dawn.
“We heard shouting, then a woman crying out, and suddenly, shots,” said one resident. “By the time we ran outside, it was too late.”
Surrender and Shock
After the shooting, the husband reportedly walked out of the house, got into his car, and drove straight to the nearest police station.
He handed over the firearm used in the shooting, along with his wife’s cellphone, which contained the evidence that allegedly triggered the fatal confrontation.
“He did not resist arrest,” confirmed Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo. “He arrived voluntarily and confessed to what he had done. He is cooperating fully with the investigation.”
Emergency services declared Portia dead at the scene.
Community in Mourning
The murder has sent shockwaves through the quiet Johannesburg suburb where the couple lived. Friends and neighbours described the couple as “ordinary” and “peaceful,” saying there had never been public signs of domestic tension.
“They were always together — shopping, walking, laughing,” said a close neighbour. “No one could have imagined something like this happening. It’s heartbreaking.”
Social media has since been flooded with posts mourning Portia’s death, with many expressing outrage over how quickly emotions can lead to irreversible tragedy.
“Five bullets for betrayal? Nothing justifies this,” one post read. “He should have walked away.”
Another user wrote, “No matter what she did, nobody deserves to die like that. Now two lives are gone — hers and his.”
Police Investigation Underway
Police have confirmed that a murder case has been opened and that the suspect will appear in court this week. Investigators are also reviewing digital evidence from the victim’s phone and messages between the couple.
“This is a deeply tragic case,” Colonel Masondo said. “We urge the public to remember that violence is never the solution. Walk away before things escalate to this point.”
He added that psychological and emotional support services would be made available to both families affected by the crime.
A Tragic Pattern
Experts say this case highlights a growing pattern of gender-based violence in South Africa — often triggered by domestic disputes, jealousy, or infidelity.
According to data from the South African Police Service, intimate partner killings remain one of the leading forms of homicide involving women in the country. In many of these cases, the perpetrators are husbands or boyfriends.
“Infidelity is one of the most common triggers for fatal domestic violence,” said social worker and relationship counsellor Lindiwe Mahlangu. “When emotions, pride, and betrayal collide, people can lose control — especially when there are firearms involved.”
Mahlangu emphasised the importance of communication, counselling, and early intervention to prevent similar tragedies.
Funeral Arrangements and Family Reactions
Portia’s family is reportedly struggling to come to terms with her sudden death. Her sister described her as “a loving, hardworking woman” who had been looking forward to celebrating her birthday with family later that weekend.
“She didn’t deserve to die like this,” she said. “She had her flaws, like everyone, but she was a good person. Now our hearts are shattered.”
The couple’s two young children, aged eight and ten, were not at home when the shooting happened. They are currently in the care of relatives.
Funeral arrangements are being finalised, with the family calling for privacy as they grieve.
