The mysterious disappearance of 16-year-old Kgomotso Dibetso has left his family devastated and searching for answers after he vanished from an initiation school in New Eersterus, Hammanskraal, Tshwane.
Kgomotso, who began attending Bra Happy Initiation School on 1 May 2026, reportedly disappeared on Monday, 6 July, sparking a desperate search involving his family, the initiation school and members of the community.
Family’s Search Continues
According to Kgomotso’s mother, Pauline Raphetane, the family has searched extensively for the teenager but has been unable to locate him.
She said Kgomotso was excited about attending initiation school and willingly went to the mountains. His grandfather had also visited him during his stay.
However, Pauline claims her son later complained that he was being beaten by some of the people responsible for supervising the initiates.
She further alleged that Kgomotso had attempted to escape from the initiation school several times and was at one point tied up after allegedly trying to flee.
“We were told my son went missing while they were collecting firewood. The other initiates called out to him twice and he answered, but when they called him a third time, there was no response,” she said.
The worried mother also revealed that Kgomotso lives with epilepsy, increasing concerns for his safety.
“We have checked hospitals and he is not there. I just want my son to come home safely,” she said.
Initiation School Owner Responds
The owner of Bra Happy Initiation School, Happy Mhlongo, said this is the first time such an incident has happened since he opened the school in 2010.
According to Mhlongo, no initiate has ever gone missing or died under his supervision before.
“I don’t know what really happened. We have searched everywhere and even contacted other initiation schools, but he is not there,” he said.
He confirmed that a baboon had been seen near the initiation school in June, something he described as unusual and shocking, but he did not suggest it was connected to Kgomotso’s disappearance.
Baboon Sighting Sparks Speculation
The reported baboon sighting has fuelled speculation in parts of the community.
Traditional healer John Sithole told Daily Sun that, in some traditional beliefs, the appearance of a baboon can be interpreted as a spiritual warning or a sign of negative forces. He advised the initiation school to seek guidance from other spiritual healers.
However, there is no evidence linking the baboon to Kgomotso’s disappearance, and authorities have not indicated that the sighting is connected to the ongoing search.
Mother Raises Serious Allegations
Pauline, who says she is a sangoma, claimed she consulted her ancestors regarding her son’s disappearance.
She believes her spiritual consultation suggested that Kgomotso’s disappearance was planned.
The grieving mother also expressed suspicion toward the initiation school owner and her own father, although no evidence has been presented publicly to support these allegations, and no findings have been announced by investigators.
Community Hoping for Safe Return
The disappearance has shocked residents of Hammanskraal and surrounding communities, with many hoping Kgomotso will be found alive and safely reunited with his family.
Cases involving missing children remain a matter of serious concern, and community members are encouraged to report any information that could assist investigators.
As the search continues, Kgomotso’s loved ones remain desperate for answers and are appealing to anyone with credible information about his whereabouts to contact the relevant authorities immediately.
