At least nine people were killed and 10 others wounded in a shooting in Bekkersdal township near Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and economic hub, local police said Sunday.
The attack unfolded in the early hours of the morning, shortly before 1 a.m., when gunfire shattered the quiet around a local tavern, turning a social gathering into a scene of chaos and bloodshed.

Authorities have also not confirmed whether the victims were specifically targeted or whether they were randomly caught in the line of fire. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident has once again drawn attention to South Africa’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. The country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with firearms frequently used in violent crimes.
Taverns and informal drinking spots have increasingly become flashpoints for deadly violence, particularly during weekends and public holidays. Alcohol, overcrowding, and disputes are often cited as contributing factors, though police stress that each case must be assessed on its own merits.
Community leaders in Bekkersdal have called for urgent intervention, saying residents feel abandoned and unsafe. Some have criticised what they describe as slow police response times and a lack of visible policing in high-risk areas.
“This cannot be allowed to continue,” said a local civic activist. “People went out to relax, and they never came home. Something is seriously wrong.”
The provincial government has also weighed in, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and pledging support to law enforcement agencies. Officials said trauma counselling services would be made available to affected families and witnesses.
Opposition parties, meanwhile, have seized on the incident to renew calls for tougher action against violent crime. Several politicians described the shooting as a symptom of deeper social and economic failures.
