Outrage after Grade 12 learner commits suicide amid bullying claims at Pretoria school

Outrage and grief have engulfed the Daspoort Secondary School community following the tragic death of Grade 12 learner Mpho Entle Mabena, whose passing has sparked serious allegations of bullying involving a teacher.

The incident has not only shaken fellow learners and parents but has also triggered wider conversations about discipline, accountability, and the emotional well-being of students within schools.

Mpho was found dead in his bedroom early on Friday morning by his family, just before the school day began. The devastating discovery came after what relatives describe as a troubling week of events that allegedly unfolded at school.

While authorities have confirmed his death, investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Speaking in an emotional interview, Mpho’s mother, Morongwa Mabena, described her son as a kind-hearted and respectful young man who had never shown signs of being problematic or disrespectful.

She emphasized that while parents cannot always monitor everything their children experience at school, she firmly believes that Mpho conducted himself with humility and dignity at all times.

According to the family, the situation began earlier that week when Mpho reportedly reached out to his sister, Basetsana Mathaba, to share concerns about an incident in class. He allegedly told her that a teacher had reacted aggressively after he pointed out a spelling error during a lesson. What may have seemed like a minor classroom interaction is said to have escalated into a confrontation that left Mpho distressed.

Basetsana claims that the teacher responded by confronting Mpho in front of other learners, removing his belongings, and ordering him out of the classroom. She further alleges that he was physically confronted during the incident, leaving him shaken and humiliated. Seeking help, Mpho reportedly went to the school office to report what had happened, but was told the principal was unavailable and that he should return to class.

Later, he was called back to the office, where another meeting reportedly took place involving the same teacher. According to the family, the teacher accused Mpho of using a cellphone during class, shifting the focus of the issue. Basetsana alleges that during this meeting, Mpho’s version of events was not fully considered, and instead, he was questioned about correcting the teacher in the first place.

The situation reportedly worsened when Mpho was instructed to hand over his cellphone or face disciplinary action. He refused to comply, and in the days that followed, he told his family that the teacher had stopped marking his schoolwork. Despite this, Mpho continued attending school, though he allegedly expressed that the mistreatment had not stopped.

By Thursday, when asked again about the situation, he reportedly indicated that the tension with the teacher was ongoing. The next morning, the family’s worst fears were realized when they discovered his body at home. He did not leave any message explaining his actions, leaving loved ones searching for answers.

Mpho’s mother expressed pain not only over the loss of her son but also over the lack of communication from the school. She explained that she had expected the school to notify the family if any serious disciplinary matter had occurred involving her child. However, she said no such communication was received.

As news of Mpho’s death spread, emotions quickly spilled over into public outrage. Fellow learners, friends, and members of the community began demanding accountability, with many taking to social media to voice their anger and sadness. Hashtags calling for justice began trending, amplifying the story beyond the local community.

A petition launched by one of Mpho’s friends quickly gained traction, gathering thousands of signatures within a matter of days. The petition describes Mpho as a bright and determined young man who had dreams of improving his life and circumstances.

Supporters argue that his death highlights serious failures within the school system and are calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate action against those responsible, if wrongdoing is confirmed.

The petition further alleges that the bullying was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of behavior that left Mpho feeling helpless. It claims he had repeatedly sought help but did not receive the support he needed.

These claims have intensified calls for greater accountability within schools and stronger measures to protect learners from both peer and authority-related bullying.

On Monday, tensions reached a boiling point as learners staged protests at the school. Videos circulating online show large groups gathering outside the premises, disrupting classes and demanding answers. Some footage appears to show property damage, including a gate being forcibly removed during the demonstrations. The protests reflect a deep sense of frustration and grief among students who feel their concerns are often overlooked.

Education authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway, though no official findings have yet been released. The school itself has not publicly responded to the allegations, and attempts to obtain comment from the principal have so far been unsuccessful.

This tragedy has sparked a broader conversation about the role of educators, the handling of student complaints, and the importance of mental health support in schools. Many are now calling for clearer reporting systems, better communication between schools and parents, and stronger safeguards to ensure that no learner feels unheard or mistreated.

As the investigation continues, Mpho Mabena’s story remains a painful reminder of how deeply school experiences can affect young people. His family, friends, and community are left mourning not only his loss but also the future he had hoped to build.
