ASSISTANCE TO IDENTIFY A MAN WHO WAS FOUND DEAD

Police in Cosmo City, Johannesburg, are appealing for public assistance to locate the relatives of a man identified as Percy Seke, who was found dead on Saturday, 11 October 2025.

According to authorities, the body was discovered in an open field near extension 6, raising concerns among local residents who first alerted the police after noticing the man lying motionless. When officers arrived, they confirmed that the man had no visible form of identification other than a name scribbled on a slip of paper in his pocket.

Investigators say the circumstances surrounding Seke’s death remain unclear. At this stage, foul play has not been ruled out. Police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Residents in the area described the discovery as deeply unsettling. “It’s scary because we walk past that field every day,” said a woman who lives nearby. “No one knows who he was or what happened to him. It’s heartbreaking.”

Authorities believe the man may have been in his late 30s or early 40s. He was wearing blue jeans, a black jacket, and sneakers when he was found. Forensic experts are working to trace fingerprints and any additional evidence that could confirm his identity or provide clues about his movements before his death.

The case has drawn attention to the growing number of unidentified bodies found across Gauteng, particularly in informal settlements and open spaces. Police say such cases are often difficult to solve due to limited information, missing persons reports, or incomplete identification documents.

Cosmo City Police spokesperson Sgt. Lerato Mohlala urged members of the public to come forward with any information, no matter how small it may seem. “We are appealing to anyone who may know this man or his family to contact us immediately. Someone, somewhere, must recognize him. Our goal is to return him to his loved ones and bring them closure,” she said.

The discovery has sparked renewed calls for stronger community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. Community leaders say residents often hesitate to report suspicious activity, which delays investigations and allows cases like this to go cold.

“We need to look out for each other,” said a local councillor. “When a person dies alone, unidentified, it’s not just a police matter — it’s a community tragedy. Someone has lost a brother, a son, a father, and they don’t even know it yet.”

While police continue to piece together the final hours of Seke’s life, forensic teams are examining CCTV footage from nearby shops and taxi routes. Officers are also reviewing missing person reports filed over the past two weeks to determine whether anyone matching his description had been reported missing.

As speculation grows, authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information on social media. “We understand that people want answers,” Sgt. Mohlala said. “But sharing speculation online can harm the investigation. Please bring any information directly to the police.”

Those who knew Seke, or believe they might recognize him, are encouraged to visit the Cosmo City Police Station or contact Detective Sgt. Mokoena at 011 375 8600.

For now, police say the priority is simple but urgent — to find the people who knew Percy Seke and to give them the chance to bring him home.

The investigation continues.
