A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the people of Cape Town after a 40-year-old mother lost her life during the violent storms that swept across the Western Cape earlier this week.

Phathiswa Mkunjulwa had just left her home on Monday morning, preparing for another normal workday, unaware that it would be her final journey. According to reports, she was travelling in a Bolt vehicle through Wynberg when disaster struck. Powerful winds, accompanied by relentless rain, caused a large tree to collapse onto the vehicle she was riding in, killing her instantly.
The devastating incident happened as severe weather conditions continued to batter the province. The South African Weather Service had already issued a Level 8 weather warning for parts of the Western Cape, warning residents about dangerous winds, flooding, and possible destruction across several areas.
What has touched many people deeply is the emotional story shared by Mkunjulwa’s close friend, Athini Sishuba. Concerned about the worsening weather conditions early that morning, Sishuba reportedly tried calling her friend to warn her to be careful on the roads. When the call went unanswered, she decided to leave a voice note instead, urging her to stay safe during the storm.
Sadly, that message would never be heard.
Speaking after the tragedy, Sishuba said she and colleagues initially believed Mkunjulwa was simply delayed because of the heavy rain and dangerous traffic conditions. Hours later, the shocking news arrived that their friend and colleague had died.
For Sishuba, the pain has been unbearable. She described Mkunjulwa not only as a close friend but as someone who brought joy and warmth into the lives of those around her. She said the two had shared many years of friendship before eventually becoming colleagues as well.
Friends and relatives say Mkunjulwa was deeply devoted to her four children and worked tirelessly to give them a safer life. Reports indicate that she had previously moved her family away from Capricorn because of gang violence, hoping to protect her children and provide them with a more peaceful environment.
Tributes have continued pouring in from devastated loved ones and coworkers. The legal firm where she worked described her as a kind-hearted woman whose gentle personality made everyone feel welcome. Colleagues remembered her smile, warmth, and caring nature, saying the office would never be the same without her.
Meanwhile, the deadly storm has caused widespread destruction across the Western Cape. Flooded roads, fallen trees, damaged homes, and power outages were reported in several communities. Authorities confirmed that major roads, including sections of the N1 near Worcester, suffered severe flooding and storm damage, causing major travel disruptions. Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary travel as dangerous conditions persisted.
Social media has also been flooded with frightening stories from residents describing terrifying scenes throughout the storm. Some spoke about roofs being ripped apart by strong winds, trees crashing onto roads, and entire neighbourhoods losing electricity overnight. Others said they feared leaving their homes because of how violent the weather had become.
As the province begins recovering from the destruction, many South Africans have been left heartbroken by the tragic death of Mkunjulwa — a mother whose life ended moments after leaving home for work, and whose friend’s final message of love and concern remained forever unheard.
