SIBASA, LIMPOPO – A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after kidnapping and raping a 32-year-old woman in Ha-Ramukhuba Village, Sibasa.

Asiashu David Mlangeni was handed a life sentence for rape and an additional five years for kidnapping by the Sibasa Regional Court.
The court heard that on Wednesday, 18 December 2023, the victim was walking along a street with her aunt when Mlangeni and two other people approached them.
Mlangeni allegedly forced the woman away from her aunt and took her to an unknown house, where he raped her.
In a dramatic turn of events, the woman managed to escape after Mlangeni fell asleep. She immediately made her way to the police and reported the attack.
The matter was investigated by Sergeant Khathutshelo Dorris Vele of the Thohoyandou Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
The investigation eventually led to Mlangeni’s arrest, and he remained in custody throughout the court proceedings until his sentencing on Monday, 31 August 2026.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers welcomed the lengthy sentence, saying it demonstrated the importance of ensuring that perpetrators of serious crimes are brought to justice.
Scheepers also commended Sergeant Vele and everyone involved in the investigation and prosecution for their commitment to the case, despite the significant time that had passed since the crime was committed.
The life sentence and additional five-year term bring the case to a close, with Mlangeni set to spend the rest of his sentence behind bars.
