Vryburg High School Mourns the Loss of Two Learners in Tragic Road Accident

VRYBURG, NORTH WEST — The Vryburg High School community is in mourning following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two learners, Remofiloe Mtshengu (15) and Kitso Mathope (16), as well as their 43-year-old driver.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, along the N14 road approximately 20 kilometres outside Vryburg. The learners were reportedly travelling from Delareyville to Vryburg when the vehicle they were in was involved in a head-on collision with a truck.

According to reports from local authorities, two additional Grade 12 learners who were also in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital for medical care. The truck driver, aged 45, also sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A Day That Began with Hope, Ended in Tragedy

What was meant to be the start of a new school quarter quickly turned into a heartbreaking moment for families, educators, and learners. Schools across the district typically reopen with excitement and renewed academic focus, but the news of the crash has left the community deeply shaken.

At Vryburg High School, learners and teachers gathered in shock as news of the passing of their schoolmates spread. Empty desks in classrooms have since become a painful reminder of the loss.

The North West Department of Education confirmed that psychosocial support teams have been deployed to assist learners and staff affected by the tragedy. Trauma counselling services are also being offered to help the school community cope with the emotional impact.

Government Response and Investigation

Officials from the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management have confirmed that a culpable homicide investigation has been opened by law enforcement authorities. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.

Authorities have also emphasized the importance of road safety, particularly when transporting learners. The N14 route has been identified as a high-traffic corridor where heavy vehicles frequently travel, increasing the risk of serious collisions.

Officials have called for increased caution among all motorists and stricter adherence to road regulations to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Remembering Remofiloe and Kitso

Friends, teachers, and community members have described Remofiloe Mtshengu as a kind and gentle learner who was still at the early stages of her high school journey. Kitso Mathope was remembered as a bright and focused learner with strong academic potential and leadership qualities.

Both learners were said to have been full of promise, with bright futures ahead of them. Their passing has left a deep void in the school community.

Community in Mourning

As preparations for memorial services begin, the Vryburg and Delareyville communities continue to express condolences to the grieving families. Support structures have been made available to ensure that both families and survivors receive ongoing assistance during this difficult period.

The North West Department of Education has extended its condolences and pledged continued support to all affected families and learners.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of road safety and the need for continued awareness to protect young lives on South Africa’s roads.
