South African football has been left in shock following the reported death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
At the time of publication, Mamelodi Sundowns had not yet released an official statement regarding the tragedy, and the cause of Adams’ death had not been disclosed.
The midfielder’s passing comes only weeks after he represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 before their campaign ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada.
Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches but did not feature in the knockout encounter. Following the tournament, he and several of his Sundowns teammates who were part of the national squad were given an extended break before the club’s pre-season preparations. He had been expected to report for training next week as the team continues its camp in Austria under head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025 after establishing himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s standout midfielders. A graduate of the Stellenbosch academy, he signed his first professional contract in 2020 and quickly became a key player for the club.
During his spell at Stellenbosch, Adams made 139 appearances, making him one of the club’s most-capped players. He also played an important role in helping the Cape Winelands side lift the 2023 Carling Knockout trophy.
His success continued after moving to Sundowns, where he celebrated Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League triumphs within two seasons.
On the international stage, Adams was also part of the Bafana Bafana squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, further cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield talents.
News of his reported passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes expected from teammates, clubs, supporters and football figures across South Africa and beyond.
