Women’s Day tragedy: Car rolls off cliff!

A devastating accident in KwaSwayimane, KwaZulu-Natal, claimed the lives of a beloved teacher, Anastasia Shabalala, and a 16-year-old girl, Lona Madlala, when their car plunged over 800 meters off a cliff on Saturday, August 9, 2025, casting a shadow over Women’s Day.

Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the cause of the tragedy remains unclear, with investigators still piecing together why the vehicle, driven by Shabalala, suddenly reversed and tumbled down the steep drop. Shabalala, a single mother, had received the car just last year as a heartfelt gift from her children—a bittersweet detail that deepens the family’s loss.

The crash site posed a grueling challenge for rescuers. “The helicopter rescue team worked under very difficult conditions to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage,” Duma told us, highlighting the sheer scale of the cliff. The operation was set in motion after teacher Mbali Msomi raised the alarm, alerting traffic ambassador Ayanda Msweli, who swiftly called in the helicopter team and additional support.

For the families left behind, the pain is raw, especially for Shabalala’s children, who now face life without their mother, and for Madlala’s loved ones, mourning a teenager whose future was cut short. “I have mandated my office to arrange social workers to provide professional counseling services to the families,” Duma added, signaling a commitment to support them through this harrowing time.

The incident has left the KwaSwayimane community reeling, with questions lingering about what led to the fatal plunge. As investigations continue, the loss of a dedicated educator and a young girl with her life ahead of her serves as a stark reminder of how quickly joy can turn to tragedy.
