A KwaZulu-Natal community has been left devastated after a businessman identified as Mbeje allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life in a tragic murder-suicide that has shocked residents and sparked intense debate online.
What has made the incident even more heartbreaking is the discovery of an emotional alleged suicide note found inside the businessman’s vehicle, where he reportedly spoke about heartbreak, regret, emotional exhaustion, and feeling like he had “no other way out.”
According to eyewitnesses, Mbeje arrived at his girlfriend’s neighbourhood intending to see her, but the meeting allegedly turned into a heated argument after the woman reportedly told him she wanted to end their relationship.
Witnesses say the businessman then walked back to his car, retrieved a firearm, and returned moments later before allegedly opening fire on the woman. She was reportedly shot around 10 times and died at the scene.
Residents say the businessman appeared emotionally unstable moments after the shooting. He allegedly walked toward the woman’s family home, fired three shots into the air, and informed devastated relatives that he had killed their daughter.
One shocked resident described the scene as chaotic and terrifying.
“People were screaming and crying everywhere. Nobody could believe what had just happened,” the resident said.
According to community members, when Mbeje returned to his vehicle, he found a large crowd already gathered around the woman’s body. Moments later, he allegedly turned the firearm on himself and shot himself in the head, dying instantly.
Police reportedly later discovered an emotional letter inside the vehicle believed to have been written shortly before the shooting.
In the alleged note, Mbeje reportedly expressed regret over his actions even before carrying them out. “To everyone I have hurt today, I know there is nothing that can fix what I have done. I am sorry. I never imagined my life would end like this,” part of the letter allegedly read.
The businessman reportedly described feeling emotionally destroyed by the collapse of the relationship.
“I loved her with everything I had. I gave her my heart, my money, my time, and my future. Maybe I loved too much. Maybe I lost myself trying to keep someone who no longer wanted me,” the note allegedly continued.
In another painful section of the letter, he reportedly admitted that he already regretted what he was about to do but felt mentally overwhelmed.
“I know what I am about to do is wrong. I know people will hate me for it, and they have every right to. I already regret this decision even before taking it, but my mind is tired and my heart can no longer carry this pain.”
The letter allegedly ended with an apology to both families and a final goodbye.
Community members claimed the businessman had been complaining for weeks that his girlfriend was allegedly cheating on him and planning to leave him despite the financial support he had reportedly given her over the years. Residents alleged he had paid her school fees, helped support her family financially, and even built a house for them.
Another resident said the contents of the alleged suicide note made the tragedy even more emotional for those who witnessed the aftermath.
“When people heard what was written in that letter, many were left speechless. But at the end of the day, two lives are gone forever,” the resident said.
The incident has since triggered widespread conversations on social media about toxic relationships, emotional dependency, heartbreak, and mental health struggles.
Police are expected to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the authenticity of the alleged suicide note.
