A 16-year-old Grade 8 pupil is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being viciously assaulted by a group of fellow students at Thuto Lesedi Secondary School in Vosloorus.

Thapelo Motha (also referred to as Mvulane Motha) suffered a broken nose and severe eye injuries during the attack on Wednesday, 23 July 2025. The incident allegedly stemmed from a group of boys attempting to steal his school bag.
His mother, Nomthandazo Ndaba (39), described arriving at the school to find her son bleeding profusely and vomiting. “He was immediately rushed to Clinix Botshelong-Empilweni Private Hospital, where doctors sent him straight to ICU for emergency surgery on his fractured nose and left eye,” she said.
Ndaba revealed that Thapelo had been enduring ongoing bullying since joining the school. “His friends told me he was constantly hiding and running from this group of boys who followed him everywhere. He was too scared to tell me,” she added, visibly distraught.
The family is now grappling with the emotional and psychological fallout. “His life will never be the same. He’ll need counselling once discharged, and he’s terrified to return to school,” Ndaba said. With the academic year nearing its end, she fears the trauma will impact his performance.
Thapelo claims he was attacked by up to 10 pupils and has provided names of several assailants to police investigators. Ndaba has urged the Gauteng Department of Education to interview her son directly, disputing an initial report suggesting only one pupil was involved.
Department and Police Response
Gauteng Education Department spokesman Steve Mabona confirmed the incident, stating a Grade 10 pupil has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.
“We condemn any acts that undermine the dignity of our schools. Our Psycho-Social Support team has been deployed to assist affected learners,” Mabona said, while appealing to parents to reinforce discipline.
Vosloorus police have opened a case of common assault. “The investigation is ongoing, with no arrests made yet,” confirmed Captain Neldah Sekgobela.
Ndaba is demanding justice: “Those boys must be arrested. My son deserves to feel safe.”
