Four years after the tragic death of 17-year-old Hoërskool Kriel learner Bafana Sithole, many South Africans are still asking whether justice was ever served.
The Mpumalanga teenager died after being accused of raping a fellow learner, allegations that reportedly placed him under enormous emotional pressure. According to reports, the accusations spread through the school community and had a devastating impact on his mental and emotional wellbeing.
Before his death, Sithole left behind a heartbreaking letter addressed to his mother. In the note, he expressed his love for her and said that by the time she read the letter, he would already be gone. He described feeling alone in his suffering and said he had been accused by people he believed considered themselves better than him.
It is reported that the accuser later confessed to having lied about the rape claims against him.
“Mama, I hope this letter finds you. By the time you are reading this I will be already gone. Let me love you and leave you. Sengihambike maye (I am gone). I have suffered in this world all alone. I was accused by those who are better than me.
“May she forgive me for what I did to her but I did not rape her. I am not a rapist,” Sithole said.
Following this incident, messages of grief and love poured in on social media with many sympathising with the family.
Sithole wrote that his heart had stopped functioning after he was accused of rape.
“My heart of gold has stopped beating. What was my fault. No one knew this day would come. I am now leaving her in the Darkest world and her sky will turn Grey. May my tears will be a golden memory in her life. I am not a rapist. What did I do for her to hate me this much. I have opened and closed my grave. I have fought a good fight and and have finished my race. My time to be on this earth has come to an end,“ Sithole wrote.
One of the strongest messages in the letter was his repeated denial of the rape allegation. Sithole insisted that he was not a rapist and questioned why the accuser hated him so much. He wrote that the accusation had broken him emotionally and that his “heart of gold” had stopped beating because of the pain he was carrying.
The teenager also reflected on the impact his death would have on his mother, writing that her world would become darker and her skies would turn grey. He hoped that his tears and memories would remain with her, even after he was gone.
In the note, Sithole said he had fought a good fight and finished his race, suggesting that he felt exhausted by the battle he had been facing. He described his time on earth as having come to an end and indicated that he saw no way forward.
Reports at the time stated that the learner later admitted that the rape allegation had been false. The revelation sparked widespread outrage and sympathy for Sithole and his family, with many questioning how events had escalated to such a tragic conclusion.
According to the Mpumalanga Department of Education, Sithole was found after learners had completed an examination. Educators and medical personnel attempted to assist him, but it was too late.
