A man believed to be the leader of a notorious robbery gang targeting schools and teachers in KwaZulu-Natal has been shot and killed during a police operation in Umlazi.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Mnqobi Ayanda Nxele from Hlokozi, was allegedly linked to a string of violent robberies that left teachers and community members living in fear.
According to reports, police had been tracking Nxele for some time following intelligence connecting him to several armed robbery cases in the region. Officers eventually located him in Umlazi, south of Durban, where a confrontation reportedly broke out.
It is alleged that when police approached the suspect, he opened fire on officers. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him during the exchange. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Authorities believe Nxele was one of the key figures behind a gang accused of terrorising schools, targeting teachers, and carrying out robberies in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including Hlokozi and nearby communities.
Following the shooting, rumours began circulating on social media claiming the suspect had died in a car crash while attempting to flee police. However, multiple reports have since indicated that the claims are false and that Nxele was killed during the gun battle with officers.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with some residents saying communities affected by the robberies may finally find relief, while others questioned how deeply organised criminal groups have infiltrated local areas.
Police investigations into the wider gang and related criminal activities are believed to be continuing.
