Kharishma Involved in Fatal Crash

Polokwane, Limpopo – Rising Limpopo star Melita “Kharishma” Mogale is fighting for her life after being involved in a devastating car accident that claimed one life early Friday morning.

The crash happened at around 4 AM at the intersection of Grobler and Magazyn Streets in Polokwane. Police confirmed that one passenger died on the scene, while the 20-year-old “Inama” hitmaker was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses say the collision involved a silver hatchback and a white sedan, both badly mangled from the impact. The force of the crash was so severe that emergency services had to use hydraulic tools to free the trapped victims.

One of the first responders described the scene as “horrific” — twisted metal, shattered glass, and bystanders frozen in shock as paramedics battled to save lives.

Kharishma, who has been gaining national attention for her energetic stage presence and unique blend of Lekompo and Amapiano sounds, was reportedly returning from a studio session when the accident happened.

Police are still investigating the cause of the collision. Speed and fatigue are among the factors being considered. Limpopo provincial traffic spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened.

“The matter is under investigation. One passenger was declared dead at the scene, and the driver — a well-known artist — was taken to hospital for treatment,” Chuene said.

This is not the first time Kharishma has faced tragedy on the road. In August 2024, she survived another accident near Sekhukhune after performing at a late-night event. That crash left her car severely damaged, but she escaped with minor injuries and later shared her gratitude on social media, calling it “a second chance at life.”

Now, fans are praying she gets a third.

Social media has been flooded with messages of concern under the hashtag #PrayForKharishma, as thousands of South Africans express shock and support. “Not Kharishma again 😭💔 God please save her,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote: “She’s too young to keep facing death this often. We’re praying for healing.”

Fellow musicians have also sent their well wishes. Limpopo producer and frequent collaborator Master Azart posted, “We’re shattered. She was just in the studio working on new music. We can’t believe this.”

Friends close to the artist described her as “humble and hardworking,” saying she had been preparing for a national tour to promote her upcoming EP.

Hospital staff at Polokwane Provincial have confirmed that she is receiving treatment but declined to release further details on her condition, citing patient confidentiality.

Meanwhile, authorities are piecing together what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash. Early reports suggest the vehicle may have lost control while crossing the intersection, but investigators are awaiting forensic results to determine whether alcohol, fatigue, or mechanical failure played a role.

Residents in the area said they were woken up by the sound of screeching tires and a loud bang. “It was like an explosion,” said one woman who lives nearby. “When we came outside, people were screaming and trying to help. It was terrible.”

As news of the accident spread, fans gathered outside the hospital, lighting candles and singing her songs in solidarity. Videos of supporters holding vigils have been widely shared online.

Kharishma’s management team released a short statement thanking fans for their messages and asking for privacy as the family processes the news. “Kharishma is currently receiving medical care. We ask that the public respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Tributes have also poured in for the unidentified passenger who lost their life in the crash. Police are in the process of notifying the family before releasing the name to the public.

The tragedy comes at a time when Limpopo’s entertainment scene has been celebrating a wave of young female artists dominating the charts. Kharishma’s rise to fame — from performing in small taverns to headlining major events — has been described as “meteoric.”

Just days before the crash, she had shared a video on TikTok dancing to a new unreleased track, captioned, “Big things loading 🚀✨.” The clip has since gone viral, with thousands of fans now flooding the comments with heartbreak emojis and prayers.

Music industry insiders say the young artist had a promising career ahead of her. “Kharishma was more than a performer — she was a movement,” said radio DJ Mpho Ledwaba. “She brought Limpopo sound to the national stage and made it cool again.”

While investigations continue, questions are being raised about road safety among South African entertainers, many of whom travel long distances late at night after performances.

Police have urged artists and their teams to take extra precautions, especially during the festive season when accidents are most frequent.

For now, fans across South Africa wait anxiously for updates, clinging to hope that their favourite star pulls through once again.

The Limpopo Department of Arts and Culture has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and extended support to Kharishma’s loved ones.

As dawn breaks over Polokwane, the wreckage has been cleared, but the shock lingers — another bright young life hanging in the balance, and another reminder of how quickly dreams can be shattered on South Africa’s roads.
